The Pahiatua Herald PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1935. THE INSTITUTE MOVEMENT.

One thing is certain—the Women’s j institute movement, in New Zealand has a. powerful hold. To-day, it is clearly an organisation soundly established with over 800 Institutes formed, boasting a total in excess of 31,000 members. This is a force to be reckoned with. The Rush district is singularly noted for its Institute activity. It can proudly point to so many of its officers who have risen to Federation executive positions and by their enthusiasm, marked ability and charm of manner made their continued, services .appear almost an essential part of the general organisation. No need to name each deserving: officer for it is sufficient to remind readers that Pahiatua has the enviable distinction of filling the exalted office of Dominion Federation President in the person of Airs If. Paterson. Suffice it to say that throughout the. length and breadth, of New Zealand (as all Institute members well know) no more deserving no finer choice could possibly have been made. The movement now, though still steadily expanding, is more in the process of consolidation. The force of the first hectic onward sweep is comparatively spent and now the ladies, firmly entrenched, are taking stock of their surroundings. Minor matters in the internal organisation are no doubt receiving careful consideration. Even to. outsiders it is obvious that some aspects of Institute control or development could be re-adjusted to the advantage of the movement, and the Institutes’ own journal, “Dome and Country,” is a case in point. The journal could become a powerful factor in guiding the destinies of the movement but until such time as it enters all the Institute homes, instead of a fifth of them as at present, its main object is being sadly defeated.
