MANAWATU GORGE.

IN A DANGEROUS STATE.

A DUCKY I'SCAPE. About 6.10 o'clock last evening motorists in a five-seater sedan car. proceeding from Hawke’s Bay to New Plymouth, bad a narrow escape in the Manawatu- Gorge when a slip came down as they were negotiating the highway. The incident occurred, about a quarter of a mile from the southern entrance and a large st-one went completely through the roof of the vehicle. Fortunately nobody was hurt although the driver found it necessary to clear away debris before he could proceed on h,is journey. Owing to recent heavy rains the Gorge is said to be in a, dangerous state at present—similar to when the recent slips came down and interfered with traffic for a considerable period. While he would not recommend the closing of this connecting link between the east and west coasts, Mr Brockie, Public Works [Department foreman at the Gorge, advises motorists to exercise every care. They would proceed through at the/ir own risk, he added.

Meanwhile lights have been placed near several minor slips to indicate the points of danger to motorists.
