Air R. Gower, the Labour candidate for Paliiatua. visited Porangahau and district for several da vs last week. *
Eulogistic reference wa s made concerning the. work of the secretarv (Air J. A. Walsh) at yesterday A meeting or the Farmers’ Union. Mr Breaimer considered that his next annual meeting. It was almost entirely due to the efforts cf Air Walsh that the Farmers’ Union had not gone out of existence. Jii the k-.}ui year-. s he had gono witlibuit his own. salary but lii s . In.bours in the interests of the Union were umli.nmuished. He wa s quite satisfied that if it had hot, been for the secretary ■: sticking gall antlv to . his thankless task there would ftavo been no Farmers' Union iii Paliiatua te-day. Hi* had always found that Air Walsh understood the psychology of the farmer Consequently in all matters appertaining to farming members found him particular!v easv to work with. Mr G. H. Hood considered there was no need to wait till the annual meeting. The committee had full power to increa.se the remuneration for tin* secretary who wa.s certainly entitled to greater consideration, especially as the Union. now was in a very strong financial position. The president (Air E S. Heckler) warmly endorsed the sentiments of the previous speakers concerning the worth of the secretary and by unanimous resolution of the meeting it was decided to increase his salary by £5 per annum.
