CORRESPONDENCE.
MAIN ROAD CONSTRUCTION.
DEFINITE SPEED LIMIT. (Correspondence is welcomed on interesting subjects, but we do not necessarily endorse the opinions of correspondents). (To the Editor.l Sir, —With reference to the reconstruction of the main road north and south of Pahiatua, there has been some comment under the heading of “The Rights of Motorists,” in the Eketahuna and Pahiatua Press criticising the action of our foreman in stopping certain motorists on the main road during working hours. Th© articles referred to would, we understand, tend to create the impression that the contractors have no right to stop or correct a motorist travelling over a road which is under reconstruction. This impression is not the best, in the interest of either motorist or contractor. lor th.e information of those who are not conversant with road construction, we would be glad if vou could, through the medium of your columns, inform them of the terrificamount of damage fast motor traffic can and does do to a road' which is mi dor construction, sufficient to ~hat one day’s fast motor traffic will completely ruin a week’s work, but- we have found that if the motoring fniblic are made aware of damage or inconvenience to a conrtactor that the response is usually very gratifying A\ e would also call attention to the fact that in spite of any impi es si ons given, the main road which is under construction definitely has a speed restriction ot fifteen miles per hour placed on it, and that the contractor lias the Hght tq control traffic. AA T e, as contractors, do not desire to inconvenience the motoring public any further than is necessary for the* ty of our employees or the legitimate progress of our work. M e are- authoritatively informed that if there is occasion for our representatives to report any flagrant breach of the speed restriction or any breach of the regulations governing the speed past men working on the road, and causing danger to such men, then the offending person will certainly be prosecuted, in spite oi any impression to the contrary.— AYe are, etc.,
