AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

THE MANGATAINOKA SOCIETY.

A SUCCESSFUL YEAR. The annual meeting 01 the AXanga tainoka Amateur Athletic Society was held last evening in the Library Hall, Manga tainoka, Mr F. E. Ward piredikiig. rhe was rather smaller than usual owing, no doubt, to counter-attrac-tions. To the /relatives of the late Mr., C. Walker and Mr P. i!> :i a motion of condolence was passed all standing a moment in silence. The president said that both <*l the deceased had been great supporters of the Society and would not only be missed by members of the Society _b«it by the whole community. The president's annual report read : “It is my pleasure and privilege to present this, the thirty-fifth annual report of the Society, and my sincere thanks are due to those who assisted to make my second year of office so very easy. “Our usual good fortune held and we were fortunate t-o have a fine day for our annual fixture which, also as usual, proved a sue(ess both socially and financially. “All events drew good entries, except the three field events, which were finally cancelled owing to insufficient support. The Highland events drew many competitors, those competing in th( se items in many cases travelling long distances, proving that our meeting is still one of the most popular in the Dominion. The championship events were keenly contested and proved popular.. “The cyclists turned up as 1 -ua 1 despite those who prophesied that some clubs would not compete, and with the new, very active club nowriding in our own district the coming season should prove even more successful. “The running and chopping events were, 1 am sure you will agree, quite up to standard, and gave our patrons full value. “The gate takings at the sports again showed an increase, as also did the dance door receipts, wh h is very satisfactory indeed. “Iluring the off .season the track has received a deal of attention and, while T do not wish to single out any individual worker, as all have done splendidly, I feel I must mention Mr R. A. Williams for the time and trouble he has taken over the track, and I am sure that those competitors using the track at our meeting, and those using it for training purposes, will appr< iate what has been done for their V enefit. “To the officials and worker*- who helped to make our meeting the success that it was, 1 tender mv grateful thanks, also the cong lations of the officials of the t who were present, these gentlemen taking the trouble to write offering their congratulations on the way that The meeting was conducted. ‘‘To you all 1 tender my sincere thanks for the way you have agisted me at all times during my term of office and if, as 1 am sure you will, you assist the incoming president and committee in the -a me manner, their work will be simplicity itself. “Gentlemen, I thank you again and wish you every success at future meetings. to* the success of which I shall always be hap: a to do my little best.”* The Society showed an actual credit of £G 12s on the vear’s working.
