WIDESPREAD DEVASTATION.

DISTRESS IN BRITAIN. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, October 12. The gale which swept Britain over the Aveek-end spread tragedy on land and sea. Ten deaths, including a child who avus incinerated when a chimney crashed. A youth and a man Avere blown from their cycles and the youth Avas buried beneath twenty yards of brick wall. A woman, aged 48, collapsed after buffeting by the winds. A workman was crushed against a wall when an iron box was blown against him A Hull city councillor had a narrow escape when a twelve foot chimney pierced the ceiling and landed on the desk at which he Avas working.

A car was cut in halves by a falling tree in Yorkshire, the clriAer being uninjured.

A Sunderland father A\-a.s severely injured when he flung himself over his children to protect them from a collapsing roof. Forty telephone exchanges are completely isolated. All day seven ships systematically searched a hundred miles of turbulent ocean fruitlessly seeking the crew of the Vardulia which was yesterday reported to have foundered. One vessel reported that it would have been impossible to launch boats in such a sea and in A'ieAA* of this little hope survives for the . crew of 3*. The Newcastle steamer Pendcnnis sank off the Dutch coast and the ■crew of 22 were saved by a Norwegian steamer.
