AKITIO COUNTY.

THE MONTHLY MEETING. maintenance: subsidies. The monthly meeting of the Akitio County Council was held in the Council Chambers, Pongaroa, on Monday, 14th October, and was attended by Cr. 11. B. Robertson (chair), T. A. Yeoman, A. W. Ruskell, D. W. Gray and D. R. Hall. Cr. C. Hunter .forwarded an apology for absence. GORRESPO NDEN CE. The Public Works Department advised remittance of highways subsidies in respect to the following highways: Pongaroa-Akitio £SB 3s Bd, Masterton- Weber via Alfredton £132 6s 7d, Pahiatua-Pongaroa £56 Is and lvimu Highway £ll 12s Bd, total £258 3s lid.—Received. Letters were received from the Prime Minister, Minister of Finance, Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs Department and from Mr G. R. Sykes acknowledging receipt of the Council's letter requesting a £ for £ subsidy on .roads other than highways. An application was received from Mr G. T. Smith, Pongaroa, to instal a petrol pump under Mr Davies’ verandah, and permission was granted subject to the work being carried out to the satisfaction of the County engineer.

A letter was received from the Masterton County Council re the apportionment of heavy traffic license fees in the No. 10 Highways District for the quarter ended 31st August, 1935. A circular was read from the Comity Clerk, Waitomo County Council, with reference to the native rating problem. pointing out that there should be no further delay in improving the position, and stating that his Council was of the opinion that legislation as recommended by the Native Rating Committee set up at Rotorua on the 30th May, 1934, should he introduced immediately. Further, that if it was possible for the Government to consider legislation this session that a grant should be made from the Consolidated Fund to those local bodies at present adversely affected through the non-cellection of Native rates.—The chairman mentioned that although this County was not so much affected, he thought the Council should support the representations made, and he moved accordingly. Seconded by Cr. Ruskell and carried. A circular letter from the clerk, Taranaki County Council, giving

a comparative statement of the daily rates of wages paid by various counties was received.

A letter from the District Engineer, Public Works Department, Wellington, advising that arrangements are being made to hold the next examination for foremen and overseers of road construction on Wednesday, the 30th October next, was left in the hands of the County engineer to advise any of this Council’s employees who nay wish to sit for the examination of the arrangements made.

The ranger (Mr G. T. Norman) reported that he had dealt with four horses, 4/ cattle and one bull during the month ending Bth October, 1935, and total fees collected amounted to £4 Is. Accounts amounting to £4OOI 11s 10d were passed for payment.
