BROUGHTON OUT.

A MONTH’S SUSPENSION STIPENDIARY WINS APPEAL. The Wellington District Committee last week considered the appeal of the stipendiary steward, Mr B. N. Sandilands, in the case of W. J. Broughton at Pahiatua on April 10, when the judicial committee ot the Pahiatua Club dismissed the charge against Broughton of careless riding in the Juvenile Handicap. The district committee found Broughton guilty of careless riding and decided to suspend his licence for one month from date (May 10). The appeal is a result of a notification by the officiating stipendiary steward (Mr B. N. Sandilands) that he considered the Pahiatua finding unsatisfactory, as provided by rule 57 of the Rules of Racing. After the Juvenile Handicap at Pahiatua, an inquiry was called by Mr Sandilands into interference caused to Medway when the horses had gon3 about two furlongs. Broughton is alleged to have admitted before the Pahiatua judicial committee that the horse he was riding (Finnesko) did check Medway, but he brought evidence to show that Medway contributed to the trouble. The committee found that Medway, ridden by J. Sheehan, was partly (responsible for the interference that was caused, and on this finding it decided to take no* action against either jockey. MEETINGS TO BE MISSED.

The result of the decision (says the “Post”) is that Broughton can now have little chance of overtaking the slight lead held by I>. J. Ellis in the race for the jockeys premiership. The race meetings which Broughton will have to miss include the Nelson, Wanganui, Te Ivuiti, Danneviike (second day), either Auckland or Otaki, and the Foxton fixtures. He will be able to ride at the Hawke’s Bay meeting on June 13 and 15.

Since the offence for which Broughton was suspended for a month (just a month after the incident occurred). in the Juvenile Handicap on April 10, Broughton has ridden at five meetings, being successful in saluting the judge oil 10 occasions. He scored wins at Pahiatua on Pegged Exchange and Sweet Music subsequent to the running of the Juvenile Handicap, and then he won on Korero at Westport. At Feilding at Faster he was up on three winners, but this was not exactly a lucky meeting, for he was second on four occasions. The luck was against him at Riccarton the second dav and also at Avondale, a close second at the northern fixture being the nearest he could get to a win. At Hawera last week-end Broughton was seen at bis best in the saddle, his good riding alone being responsible for the success of State Bank and Sweet Music ; he rode two other winners in the shade of Mount Egmont in Bough al and Sweet Music, and he was placed four other times. One consolation that the Awapuni rider can glean from the deferred imposition of his month's suspension is that he was able to ride at the meetings mentioned since the offence was committed, and that month was much busier for him, and probably more successful than the next monthly period to June 10. In the meantime it can almost be said that 1.. J. Ellis is going to win the jockeys’ premiership by default.
