OPENING IN INDIA. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. CALCUTTA," August 21. Costing £5,500,000, the Mettur Dam over the Kaveri River in South India, claimed to. be the largest in the world and three times as long as the Assouan Dam over the Nile, was opened to-day by Sir George Stanley, Governor of Madras. The dam will irrigate practically the whole of the Tanjore and part of the Trichinopoly districts.
