WORK FOR RETURNED SOLDIERS. TREE PLANTING ON RESERVE. The monthly meeting of the. Pahiatua County Council was held on Saturday. There were present : Crs. A. AV. Bisset (chairman), C. Hodgius, T. Fouby, Felix Bolton. F. T. “Horne F. V. Bryant, C. Lassen, H. R. Whitta. and J. R. Nelson. A deputation from the Pahiatua Branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association comprising Mr Morton Lawsoil (president) and Dr. H. Paterson (a, member of the executive) waited upon the Council requesting that the Council grant the R.S.A. the use of a reserve or piece of land for the purpose of tree plant mg, in order to provide employment for returned men out ol work. In this way work of UPe would be provided and it would be building up an asset for the Association when in later years the timber could be sold.

The Council was sympathetic to the request and agreed to sponsor the representations of the Pahiatua R.S.A. to obtain portion of the Mangatainoka river bill for tree planting and it was decided that the Lands and Survey Department be approached to grant a lease to this body. The area proposed is of 7' acres below the Town Traffic Bridge on tire Mangamut u side adjoining Air Sowry’s property. The Lands and Survey Department had offered this area to the Council at a small rental and the Council is to endeavour to secure it for the Association on a long lease. The Council f urther agreed "to pay the cost of the survey tees of land rt<P*ired on the river bed by the MANGARAMARAMA BRIDGE.

The consulting engineers. Messrs Seaton. Sladden and Pavitt. reported as follows oil the Mnngaramarama stream bridge:— I air progress lias been made on the bridge and approaches during last month. Pile driving has now M I'H completed and both abutments and wings have been concreted to undersido of girder level. The contractor is at present engaged in the construction of staging and boxing for “lie superstructure concrete. A Targe proportion of the steel necessary for girders and deck slab is on the ground and about one quarter of the approach filling has been completed. It was decided that the heavy traffic weights on the Mnngaramarama Bridge. No. 442 M.H. be limited to 4 tons per vehicle. GENERAL. ~,T lj£ operator of the power grader (L. Baker) submitted his report on the various brands* of petrol tested in the grader and as a result of one grade being noticeably better the C ouncil decided to procure Zipp motor spirit from Associated Motorists for a period of one month. Mrs R. C. Austin is to l«e thanked lor her kindness in forwarding photographs of pioneering interests ol the district. Thp Council accepted same and undertook to frame and hang them in the Council buildings. A letter of thanks is also toT Uv forwarded tr> her mother.
