ELEPHANT’S WONDERFUL MEMORY
On their visit to Featherston two years ago, one of the elephants at the circus discovered a. tap in a secluded part of tlie station buildings, from which it took a drink. On arrival there of the circus train last week, as soon as the elephants’ truck was unloaded, this same elephant made straight lor the same tap, which it turned on and took another drink. This clearly demonstrates the wonderful memory these mammoths are known to possess. Strangely enough, the elephants have the sense to turn a tap on, but not to turn it off again. This is somewhat like a. monkey with a box of matches. He will take a match out, and if it happens to be wrong end first, it will continue to try and strike matches until they are finished, finally throwing the box away in disgust. It just lacks that sense possessed by its alleged distant relative—man—to turn the match round.
