Prisoners were sentenced by the Chief Justice this morning as folJohn Phillip (Tampton Collett, for committing rape on a. girl aged 4> years. and indecent assault on a girl aged 8 years, seven years hard labour and fifteen strokes of Hie cat o - n i ne-tails on the first charge and three years 7 bard labour on the second. the sentences to be concurrent. Sir Michael Myers said that, abhorrent as the idea of corporal punishment was to him, he had been convinced. on reading the depositions, that Collett was deserving of such punishment. However. His Honour had taken the precaution of procuring a medical report and this proved that there was no ground why the punishment he* thought necessary should not be inflicted. Ronald Edward Alorrison, for breaking and entering at Nelson, was sentenced to eighteen months reformative detention. -His Honour remarked that Morrison was fast qualifying as an habitual and if he came before the Court again he would be certain t-o be so declare d. John McCarthy. for breaking, entering and theft at Palmerston X. was sentenced to 18 months’ hart! labour. Benjamin Ivirkbridge, for assault causing actual bodily harm, one vear probation and ordered to pay £22 6s the costs of the prosecution, within six months.
