•TINIEST .BROADCASTER.” ANTIQUE FURNITURE’S ENEMY LONDON January 24. The smallest broadcaster has been found in the minute “death-watch” beetle, the ticking of whose spine and jaws, amplified millions of times, as it burrowed into a piece of oak was heard at the Timber Research Laboratory. It is hoped ultimately that it will be possible to accurately locate the beetle in the old wood which it inhabits, and so avoid unnecessary cutting out yards of irreplaceable carving.
The beetle is regarded as the worst vandal in the destruction of antique furniture.
