TEA PRICE RISE. Interviewed by a Taranaki Herald reporter, a local tea merchant stated that a fairly substantial rise in the price of tea had been anticipated for some months. In fact, it was considered that the rise of fourpence just before Christmas would be followed by another increase before the end of December. Tea purchased by retailers from indent merchants over the past three or four weeks had been bought at advanced rates. While the local factors mentioned in the Auckland message had a good deal to do with the present rise, he thought that the better tone of the foodstuffs market was the chief reason for the increase. The adoption of the restricting of production and export from the chief growing centres had allowed the merchants to rid themselves of held-over stocks. Now they were short, and there was brisker buying in London, the greatest tea mart. The public demand for tea. was a fairly steady one. so that the increase in the retailed price was not likely to be offset by a decreased sale, thus forcing the price down again. Re also thought there would be further rises, the merchant, concluded.
