weeds PAH VALLEY ROAD.
At the monthly meeting qf the Fketahuua County Council there were present. Crs ; J. B. Carruthers (chair), C. T. Richardson G. Oil v uit A. E. Brittain, L. Houlbroo&e, F. M. Goggin, C. E Goss, K \V Kebbell, W. O. Twenty man, A.' J. Perry. Cr. H. N. Kebbell was granted leave of absence. . , That the chairman and clerk take any action necessary tor the eollec turn of outstanding rates, let tine of Alfredton Road cottage be left in the hands of the chairman. Three” 0 tenders were t«;oived tor L H Ramsden (Alartinborough) at 4s 9d per cubic yard was accented. The chairman reported on a satisfactory arrangement with the property owner concerned to place fences on road on No. 15 highway nd a cemetery on their proper line. '* Mr S. Davies, Alfredton, wrote asking for improvement of road leadurn to his property.—The chairman saTd the Council could do nothing where the road deviated on private property. It was decided to grade that portion of the road on the proper line. * The Health Department wrote enclosing conditions governing the administration of cemeteries. It was decided that the present chairman of the Newman Cemetery trustees he communicated with asking what was desired to do in the matter. Respecting weeds on Pah Valley road the Inspector of Noxious Weeds intimated that he would be very pleased if the Council would exercise its powers to have the weeds cleared. Cr. Twentyman: It looks as if they want us to do the ob. The chairman stated the Council had power to act under its bylaws. But it seemed that the Stock Department was sitting down on its job and - putting the onus of clearing the road of weeds on the local bodies. 'But if the Council cleared the roads what was the Department going to do in respect of weeds on private property. It was no use the Council clearing the rOTTds if the weeds were allowed “over the
enoe." , ~ Cr Hculbrooke: It’s a delicate hing to meddle with. There are ilenty of cases when the occupier ,-onld be pushed off his section if he regulations were strictly enforcd. The clerk: We would have every atepayer in court. In reply to a question the clerk aid there was plenty of statutory uthority to spend money in the latter but that did not get one nywhere. Cr. Richardson expressed the pinion that it would prevent the pread of weeds considerably if the ’ouncil did accept responsibility of learing or having the roads clearer. Goggin thought the Department would have more pull than the ;11 body and should do the work. Cr. R. W. Kebbell concurred. It was finally decided to inform he Department that the Council iad not the power to enforce the learing of private property and it ,e recommended that the Departnent administer the act- and take ieps to prevent the spread of proom. It was stated that power was to ~ ■ given County Councils to raise loan without a vote for the cheap purchase of sodium chlorate.—The hairman said that noxious weeds ? ere now on the decrease and sales pf sodium chlorate were a falling puantify. Further some of the dairy
companies were indenting the chemical and selling it at 44 d per lb by the arum. The bulk qf the stuff used was being purchased by the farmers from the factories. This year’s requirements were estimated at about half that of last season. In these circumstances he did not think it was necessary for the Council to act. No action was taken. It was decided that the excess weight limit he confined to live stock) only. The ranger’s report disclosed that 125 head of stock had been caught for the month.
