THE “NEW ZEALAND HERALD”

SEVEN TIETH ANNIVER SAR Y. TRIUMPH OF JOURNALISM. To commemorate the seventieth anniversary of its foundation tlie “New Zealand Herald,” Auckland, published on Monday a remarkable illustrated supplement of 68 cages which looked like a \eritable **Auckland Weekly” and was, in itself, a triumph for that class of production. The supplement is probably the most complete and attractive or its kind ever to be issued by* a daily in the Dominion and with*the regular daily* issue the total number of pages was 88. Ranked always a- the leading newspaper in New Zealand, the **Herald” has fairly won its enviable reputation for progress and integrity. It is with genuine pleasure, on its seventieth birthday, we wish this paper “very many happy re tu ms.” In addition to the seemingly inexhaustible range of photographs of people and places, now and in the very early days, the supplements makes fascinating reading. The “Herald.” it- states, was founded before the days of railways and telegraphs. It was four month.- old when the first sod of tlie North Island railway was turned. Telegraph lines were under construction, but had not been brought into use as the swift carriers of news from all parts of tlie colony. Communication and transport were ]>os.sible oniv at heavy cost, and in the face of tremendous difficulties: steamships were only just beginning to appear on the Waitemata. The “Herald” was born at a critical juncture in the young colony’s history. The future of Auckland, and, indeed, of the whole North Island, was in the balance. The Maori War had spread from Taranaki to the Waikato, and, in face of the Native hostility, an inclination was growing to abandon the development of the province and leave to lmsh and fern the greater part of the North Island. The founder of the “Herald” was Mr A\ . C\ Wilson, in partnership with Air John Williamson. In July, 1876, Mr W. C. Wilson died, and was succeeded by Air W 8. Wilson and Air J. L. Wilson. On January 1, 18/,, the “Herald” incorporated the “Southern Cross. ’ which had been bought a co pie of months before by Air A. G Horton from a Sir Julius Vogel syndicatefa Mg both the Wilsons died, and in 1902 Afr Horton died, leaving the new century to their successors. The present directors are Messrs Henry Horton, managing director. W. R. AVilson, F. w. Wilson. R. i Horton, A. L. Wilson and R. H. Wilson . In its choice of editors, the New Zealand Herald” lias been singularly fortunate, for the successive occupants of the chair have been men of ability, judgment and vision. to whom the sustained success , f the journal over 70 years was largely <lue, the supplement states. Although the first 12 years } roughfc four changes in the editorship the “Herald” has had only eight editors. The longest term as editor was that of Air William Berry, who succeeded to the office in 181.1, and continued in it until his death in 1903. The present editor is Afr R A 1 Hacket, who succeeded Air Wiiliani Lane in 1917.
