SERVING TWO MASTERS.

MINISTER AND MAYOR.

IS IT PRACTICABLE? Electric Telegraph— Press Association WELLINGTON, Last Night. Opposition to any minister in circuit work seeking a public position, ■vr 1 as f uem t> er of Parliament, or JMayor of a city* or borough, was expressed by the Wellington Methodist Synod to-day, when it passed, by* Z\_ votes to 13, a motion to amend regulations in that direction. liie motion, which becomes a remit to the Methodist Conference, aroused special interest, a minister at present being the Mavor of Dunedin. Mr R. Hampton, who moved the resolution, said he could advance several reasons, but would reply on one only—that the position of a circuit minister was a full-time position. He could discuss on the ground of ordination vows and of the duties of a Mayor not being compatable with those r f a minister. For instance, a Mavor might be expected to welcome a brewers’ conference in the town said Mr Hampton, amid laughter. * The mover of the motion stated he did not intend that the motion should include such bodies as hospital boards and school committees. Mr J. M. Thompson seconded the motion, saying that a minister’s calling was the highest, but ir a man found that a mistake had been made and that he could do better work elsewhere, he should leave the ministry ; he could not do a minister’s work and another’s.
