TREE PLANTING.

Since the tree-planting scheme of the Canterbury Progress League was. inaugurated six weeks ago no fewer than 73,085 trees (mostly pines) have been distributed (says the Christchurch Times). About halt this number have been planted by tlie local bodies and the remainder by farmers for shelter purposes. Orders for trees are reaching the office daily, and it is anticipated that before the planting season 1S something like 100,000 trees will be distributed. These trees are draw from surplus stocks of the ' Forest Service, and had they , been: used in this manner the\ 1 ably would have been wasted, neon use, being mostly three-year-trees, they would be too large transplanting next season.
