OXLEY AND PETRIE.
FIGHT MAY EVENTUATE. The reappearance in the ring of the Dominion professional lightweight champion, Ted Oxley, at Pahiatua. early this month after a fairly lengthy" rest necessitated by an injury, created wide interest in boxing circles, says an exchange. Oxley had as his opponent Johnny McKay a rugged young Gisborne lightweight, but the latter was unable to cope with the champion’s superior speed and ringer aft, Oxley winning by a comfortable margin on points. McKay displayed' his characteristic aggressiveness, hut Oxley repeatedly scored with effective rights and lefts, varying his attack to good advantage. Accurate punching and elusive side-stepping were features of the champion’s showing, and he is evidently not far from his best form. It i.s likely that Oxley will shortly figure in a contest with the visiting British Columbia lightweight champion, Billy Petrie. The paii- are about the same height and built on somewhat similar lines, so that a meeting between these two test and clever lightweights appeals as a first-rate attraction.
