PAHIATUA RACING CLUB.

PROFIT ON RECENT BALL

A meeting of stewards of the Pahiatua Racing Club was held last evening in the office of Messrs Smith, McS berry and Raw son. There' were present—Messrs H McSherry (President), D. Kelly, S-. V. Rodney, E. L, Harvey. lan Taylor, F. Britland, S. T. Tinney. F. Moore, C. Johnski, N. Bicknell. A. Judo, O. Hodgins. R. J. Smith, P. J. Lloyd and C. Connell. There were also present Messrs J. G. Swamson (secretary) and C. E. B. Irving (race ball secretary)..

Air Irving submitted a balancesheet on the recent ball which showed a very gratifying credit. The President said he thought that very hearty thanks were due to the special committee for carrying out the detail work, also the stewards who had assisted in various ways on the day. The best thanks of the Club were due to the ladies who provided such an excellent supper. They worked fully a week before and held special meetings. Nor was the support in this respect confined to the wives of stewards and members only. But outsiders not even connected with the club had generously helped in the provision of dainties and thero had been an abundance of splendid fare. The ball, said Air AlcSherry, had gone with a great swing. The stewards had not hoped to make any money out of it so that it was all the more gratifying that a credit had been shown. The function thus had proved a success financially and otherwise.

To all helpers a special vote of thanks was carried by acclamation, stewards expressing their gratification at the outcome. Air S. V. Rodney said it had been very good of the Club to go to the trouble of featuring the head of his old horse, Passenger, so prominently in the scheme of decoration. It showed that they appreciated the little he had done for the Club and lie thanked them very much for the honour.

The president paid a glowing tribute to the work of the decorators. Messrs Ron and Cyril Smith, whose scheme, he said, had been unique. The wonderfully novel effect had been eulogised from all quarters. Air McSherry and others referred to the vast amount of work carried out so expertly by the secretary (Air Irving) who was unanimously voted an honorarium. Air S. T. Tinney (a past secretary) remarking that comparatively. he was receiving only pence instead of pounds that such a task entitled him to.

DATE OF NEXT RACE MEETING

The Egmont Racing Club wrote objecting to the next Pahiatua race meeting being held, as proposed, on January 31st and February. Ist 1934, as the Egmont meeting is set down for February Ist- and 3rd. 'File President said that January 31st and February Ist were the dates suggested for Pahiatua by the Conference'. Personally lie did not think that Pahiatua could race successfully on these dates and he would be ixlad to co-operate with Egmont on any reasonable suggestion.

Other stewards held a similar view. After a lengthy discussion and perusal of the list of dates it was decided to apply to the Conference for Friday and Saturday, April 27th and 28th. The reason for taking the end of thi- week is because Ahzac Day falls on Wednesday April 25th. These dates were the only suitable ones so far as Pahiatua. is concerned. Ihe nearest meetings are Alasterton on April 13th and 14th. AJ arton (one day.) on April 18th and Egmont on May 3rd and sth.

It was decided to inform the Egmont. Club that Pahiatua did not in tend to race on January 31st and February Ist if it could possible be avoided.

A happy little ceremony took place at the conclusion of the meeting, when Air AlcSherry, on behalf of the Stewards, presented to one of their number, Mr P. J. Lloyd, a silver mug in honour of a recent notable event in the latter’s household. Ah Lloyd almost blushingly returned thanks for thei surprise gift.
