The Pahiatua Herald PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 20, 1933. EARLY HISTORY OF THE DISTRICT

The local Women’s Institute is doing good service in planning a competition for the best contribution on the early history of the district ■with special reference to the pioneers of the early days. The narratives need not necessarily be of a high literary standard to secure due recognition What is wanted is a reliable account of the men and women who blazed the trail, and who did so much in laying the foundations of the future picturesque and progressive municipality. Many of those who did so much for the common good in those rugged early days have gone to their reward, and unfortunately a threat deal of interesting data has in numerous cases been lost to the community. The Women’s Institute is making an effort to. rescue from the stream of time much valuable material and it is to be commended. The publication of the history of the district will also provide an opportunity of giving honour to whom honour is due. In these days the pubjic possess short memories and often forget their benefactors, past and present There are many who are enjoying certain privileges to-day which were created for them by the toil and personal sacrifice of those who have never received the credit to which they are entitled. The same applies to a number of local institutions which are a boon to certain people in the community, but who avail themselves or all the benefits without con. tributmg anything to their upkeep. Members of the Women’s Institute comprise several very able ladies who should be able to produce some very interesting particulars which will make both entertaining and instructive reading.
