FARMING NEWS.

The system of purchasing milk was mentioned at the Kaiparoro meeting when it was stated that the present system of purchasing oil butter-fat was not altogether satisfactory, hut so far no better system was offering. “We hear talk about things being on the turn now,” was a remark passed at the Kaiparoro meeting, “but they are supposed to have been on the turn for the last five years.” “It’s like a maze, it goes round and round,” cammented another shareholder. As showing the drop in. cheese prices last season, the chairman at the Kaiparoro meeting mentioned that receipts from cheese were down about £I2OO as compared with the previous year, although about nine tons more cheese was made. The pay-out for the year would be about 9.10 d over all.

“Herd testing enables the dairy farmer to work liis farm on business lines, with the onus on him to do his part in helping to establish a herd of producers,” stated Mr L. Wilton in his annual report to the annual meeting of the Wairarapa Herd Testing Association. “I would like to mention that it is the individual cow’s yield of butter-fat which counts and this, irrespective of test.”

According to the new dairy regulations milk grading machinery has to be installed to grade the milk. Each of these machines, one for each factory, will cost something in excess of £SO by the time it is installed in working order. Shareholders at Kaiparoro seemed to be of the opinion that this additional expense was rather hard at the present juncture.
