RANFURLY SHIELD MATCH.
EXCITEMENT IN CHRISTCHURCH. A RECORD CROWD. Electric Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. All previous football attendances threaten to be passed by to-day's crowd at the Canterbury—Southland Shield match. An advance guard of visitors from various country districts arrived last evening and these were swelled to many thousands long before 10 o’clock this morning, when three special trains arrived from Dunedin and Invercargill, followed by other specials at intervals, packed to the doors. In addition, streams of cars converged on Christchurch from the early hours, some from as far afield n.s Southland. Blenheim and Nelson Thy ferry boat also brought an unusually large number. The streets before noon when the trek to the ground began were more crowded than in National week and a real test match atmosphere prevailed. Tire weather is gloriously fine, almost midsummer. The ground is in splendid condition for fast piay. THREE SPECIAL TRAINS. INVERCARGILL'S ENTHUSIASM. ■ PIPE BAND AND OYSTERS. INVERCARGILL, August 18. Three special trains pulled curt of here to-night, bearing about 700 Southlandors bound for Lancaster Park, Christchurch, where They hope to see Southland defeat Canterbury in the Ran fu riv Shield match tomorrow. There was great enthusiasm at the station as each train departed. It is expected that the number which left here will be considerably increased by the time Dunedin is reached. The Southland Pipe Band is accompanying the excursionists. Among the luggage is a sack' of oysters donated by the local merchant for presentation to the Canterbury Rugby Union.
