Local detectives working in conjunction with Scotland Y;.rd have unearthed an extensive illegal traffic in opossum skins which have been shipped to London either as rabbit or fox skins secreted in wool bales. The slaughter of opossums is prohibited in New South Wales and heavy fines are provided. The detectives estimate that as a result of their investigations of the books of certain firms in Sydney at. least 100,000 skins were shipped overseas surreptitiously since 3931. the value of which, despite a depressed market, is in the vicinity of £30,000. Evidence lias been pic cured that motor lorries brought skins from the country to the city by night to an organisation run 011 systematic lines.
