The fuse is inserted in a touch-hole drilled in the side of the Gun. NO BORING! CUTS LABOUR AND MATERIALS DOWN TO A MINIMUM. Using the Artillery Splitting Gun. a .charge is made ready for firing in about 2 minutes, a great saving in time and labour over the old method of boring the log. tamping the hole, etc. A remarkable saving of material is also effected, the Gun being charged with about liozs of powder only, this quantity being as . effective as treble or quadruple the amount when used under the old method. This is accounted tor hv the fru-t that the charge is closely confined in a steel tube, thereby eliminating loss of explosive power when fired and also when the Gun is being driven into the log, the powder becomes very highly compressed and a more powerful explosion is obtained.
