HOTEL FIRE TRAGEDY.
BOARDER BURNED TO DEATH. ANOTHER IN HOSPITAL. Electric Telegraph—Press Association THAMES, This Day. The Royal Oak hotel at Tapu, 12 miles from Thames, was completely destroyed by fire at 3.15 o’clock on Sunday morning. Benjamin Ludwig, u widower, aged about 50, prospector, was burned to death and Leonard Flynn, single, aged about 40, a prospector, is in hospital with severe burns to his face and hands. His condition is not serious.
The proprietor, L. M. Parry, and family, who were living in an attached cottage, awoke and discovered the hotel a mass of flames. They roused F lynn with extreme difficulty and carried him down the back fire escape, then made two desperate attempts to reach Ludwig, but were driven back by the* flames. Everything was lost. The insurances are not available. Ludwig and Flynn were the only boarders at the time. The building was owned bv f>. Potheridge, of Wa.iroa North.
