Goods traffic has also picked up since last month, although not to the same extent, the increase amounting to only 27.2 per cent., while compared with a year ago, a decrease of 2.7, per cent, is recorded. This is reflected in the net ton-miles figures, which show an increase of 2.1 per cent, over the previous month, but a decrease of 22.7 per cent, from the corresponding period of 1932. Operating revenue for the month under review has risen by 0.5 per cent, over last year’s corresponding figure, while expenditure has declined. by 2.8 per cent. The cumulative totals for the expired portions of the financial yeards 1931-32 and 1932-33—to 30th January and 4th February respectively—indicate an improvement in passenger traffic of 1.3 per cent., but a less favourable position in all other aspects of railways operations. Tlie decreases recorded are as follows : Goods traffic 6.1 per cent. ; net tonmiles, 10.7 per cent. ; operating revenue, 7.4 per cent. ; and operating expenditure, 8.7 per cent. Actually, on the above figures, the balance of revenue shows an improvement of 16 per cent, for the current veni.
