GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S CUP
A HANDSOME TROPHY FOR RUGBY. Electric Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, June 29. The cup presented by the Gov-ernor-General, Lord Bledisloe, as a trophy fpr test Rugby matches between New Zealand and Australia, has arrived in Auckland from England. The cup is one of the most handsome presented in New Zealand. It is of sterling silver and is surmounted by a Rugby football. J lie chasing on the lid is an interweaving of New Zealand fern and Australian gum nuts and leaves jn high relief Engraved on the front of the cup are the arms of New Zealand, the arms of Australia being on the reverse side. The chasing around the base is an intermingling of Australian wattle flowers and New Zealand kowhai flowers in lelief. Ihe height of the cup irrespective of the plinth, is 28 inches; it is 25 inches wide and weighs 290 ounces. The substantial oaic plinth is surrounded by 25 shields for the name of the winning country in each series of games Th© cup is to be known as the oledisloe Cup mid is engraved • “Presented by Lord Governor-General of New Zealand, 1931..” The cup and plinth are enclosed n a. baize-lined oak case. The trophy was designed 'bv MiNelson Isaac, head of the art school ol the W ellington Technical College, and was made by Walker and Hall, Ltd. Ihe announcement ol the presentation of the cup was made last September.
1 he first game for the first series if matches for it will be played in Sydney on Saturday.
