BURNING MONEY

In denouncing forest waste m an address to the Wellington Philosophical Institute, Air E. Phillips Turner, F.R.G.S., said it had been estimated that by the burning of the Puhipuhi kauri forest the State lost 453 million feet of kauri timber, “which, on the price prevailing before the present slump, would be worth £2,265,000 to the State! This destruction of valuable or potentially 7 valuable forest has m the main been due to lack of appreciation by the people of New Zealand of the great value of forests. Had they" realised the value of these forests they would have insisted on adequate and efficient measures being taken to protect them.”
