BILLANCE BREEZES SOCIAL GOSSIP. (From Our Ballance Correspondent). Miss Handcoek, Woodville, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs J. W. Handcoek. Air G. Gibson, Kaitawa, paid a brief visit to the district and was the guest of Mr J. H. liremner. Messrs A. Hay (chairman), and J. Gibson (director), of the Tararua Dairy Company, are attending the Dairy Conference in Palmerston X. Mr J. H. Bremner was a successful exhibitor in field roots at the Manawatu Winter Show. FOOTBALL. LOCAL TEAMS IMPROVING. The Ballance third grade football team, although beaten in all games but one so far, clearly demonstrated last Wednesday, against the strong Athletic team, that they arc steadily improving. In the first round Athletic had a walk over by 20 points to 5, but they were indeed fortunate to win out last week by 11 to 6- On the day’s play a draw would have been a good indication of the merits of the respective teams and had some of the home team bad their wits about them 5 points could easily have been averted.. The ball rolled over the line near the Ballance goal and several players foolishly stood and watched while an Athletic man rushed up and scored. Bruce Taylor easily converted. This man proven himself a versatile player, for, in the first spell, playing in the forwards, he scored a try by bustling tactics. After the interval he was transferred to wing-threequarter and scored another good try from a passing rush. Altogether be accounted for 8points out of 11. X. Gosford scored the other try for the visitors. Walker scored for the home team and also kicked a penalty goal. Mr AI. Crane refereed. Ballance sadly miss thenwingers Ekert and Holdaway , who were injured early in the season and are still on the line. Forwards have had to fill these positions and being unaccustomed to them, are too frequently caught out of position leaving big gaps for the opposition to penetrate. In Bellshaw and Howell Athletic have two fast backs who take their passes in their stride and who run straight. They each have a tendency to try and play- the opposition alone at times and the sooner they realise this mistake the better. The Ballance ladies once again hospitably entertained the teams to a very acceptable c-up of tea,, Mr Smith returning thanks on behalf of the visitors.
