The dramatic step made by Right Hon. . G. Coates, Leader ol the Opposition, in t!ie House of Representatives yesterday is cue which will earn for the hon. gentlem:yi great praise throughout the Dominion for his statesmanlike move. Mr Coates lias given Parliament a notable lead which was taken yesterday as the outcome of his motion for tile cooperation of all parties in the formation oi a special committee of ten members represr nti.tom of all .sections to investigate the serious position of the national finances, and attempt the framing of remedial measures. The resolution is a rebuke to those unkiii-i critics who have twitted Mr Coates lately in connection ■ with his replies to the overtures re fusion. Mr Coates has shown clear 1.. that fie has been fully* alive to llio gravity of the situation. He stated the position very plainly yesterday when. he. emphasised that quick ,ir--1 oil w as essential. He said“ Had a general election been forced nnf the electors given the right to decide, valuable time would have hem lost, and it was necessary tlr t u time should be wasted in. invest gating the position and arrivin'; at some plan to be adopted. The Reform Par-
ty had come to the conclusion, after giving the whole question most serious consideration, that the time had
arrived when all parties in the House should f>ji-ne together and fare the position at once.” The political situation has now become the most interesting and critical In the country’s history for many years.
