LATE MR. F. E. BEAUFORT

On Thursday afternoon, in the Pahiatua'*Public Hospital, there passed away a resident who had been identified with Paliiatua since his boyhood—Mr Francis (“Frank”) Edward Beaufort, aged 43 years. 'The deceased, who was born here, was the eldest son of the late Mr John William Beaufort, a pioneer settler. The latter came out from Home and engaged in work as a surveyor. About the year 1884 he settled in the Paliiatua district, where lie became a resident surveyor. In 1886 he secured the position of engineer to tiie Paliiatua Borough Council and later assumed a dual role, being appointed Clerk as well. He bad two daughters and four sons, of whom “Frank” was the eldest.

“Frank,’' as a boy. joined the staff of the W.F.C.A., Ltd. He subsequently left the town for several years and entered the employ ■of the late Mr J. Powell. Makuri. The deceased enlisted far tbe Great War, seeing considerable service and earned the Military Medal. Upon his return he lived at Te Kuiti. for a shorttime, but. in 1918 lie rejoined liis old firm, the W.E.C.A. Paliiatua, and up to the time of his death was storeman. Ho had been ailing for some time, and had to relinquish liis duties three weeks ago when he entered the Public Hospital, The deceased acted as caretaker also, of the Drill Hall for several years. He was of a very straightforward character, quiet and unassuming. aqd greatly respected. Deceased leaves a Widow, three sons, and one daughter, the. eldest childbeing nine yeans of age. The funeral took place this morning, leaving the Public Hospital at 1ff.30 o'clock for ,the local Cemetery. The 'cortege- was a, very lengthy oile and the mourners included many of his fellow returned soldiers. The service at the graveside was conducted fcv the Rev A. F. Sutherland H.A., (Presbyterian). “The Last Post” was sounded by Mr H. A. Bick. The Pallbearers were Messrs. J. Grant, M. Stevensen, T. Stevenson, I) Berry F White, and H. Mc-Quilken. The many beautiful wreaths included one from the several departments of tlie W.F.C.A. Ltd., and the local branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association.
