UNDER ANAESTHETIC
LITTLE GILL’S DEATH. Electric Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH. March 18. Medical evidence was heard at the inquest to-day on Shirley McKenzie, aged four years, who died under an anaesthetic on Saturday in the Christchurch hospital. The operation was for adenoids. The child was carefully examined beiore being given the anaesthetic and the heart and lungs and general physical condition were found to be satisfactory. The pat ent took the anaesthetic easily, then breathing stopped without warning. Restorative measures were tried 't once and besides intifiein! respiration, strychnine was
and massaged the heart, all w r*iout result. A post-mortem exaiuin; closed the condition of status hymphetituc. Witnesses described the condition as being of rare occurrence and all agreed t was very unlikely to be discovered b\ thorough examination. Tin effect was to render the patier.: unable to survive an anaesthetic. There was enlargement of tile thymus gland and of the liymptll glands generally. The coroner found that death was due to this condition, hastened by the administration of anaesthetic.
