T. M. Wilford, speaking in London on 11th February, 1930. Toasting the health of Lord and Lady Bledisloe. Mr. Wilford said that New Zealand was fortunate in the selection of the new Governor-General. In the course of his speech he stated that New Zealand farmers are leading the world in grassland production. Continuing, Mr. Wilford said: "The Dominion's greatest problems are how best to increase production from the pastures, and thus develop the prosperity of the Empire.” Our grassland farmers are to-day producing over 40 per cent, more products per acre than they did eight or nine years ago. Butterfat has doubled in that period, with an increase of only 40 per cent, in the number of cows, and ho important increase in the area devoted to dairying. Top-dressing is the outstanding factor in successful grassland production. An efficient manure means more prolific pasture, more stock to the acre, and more profitable dairy returns.
