The ox-Chancellor, Dr. Wirth, writing to the press. says things cannot continue as they have been going recently or the ten year development of democracy in Germany will end like the abdication of Liberalism in Italy. The nightmare c>f the past few weeks, such as the fruitless negotiations for a coalition, was a prelude to Fascism. The Daily Telegraph’s Berlin correspondent points out that Dr. Wirth has only said what many responsible ofb co-helder,s have ldng been whisper ing and since the trivial fiasco which leiT to the centrists’ withdrawal from the Cabinet, these fears have become certainties. The general view of political experts is that a Fascist blow is bound to come hut that it will be parried, Dr. Wirth is not convinced tine Republic will repel the attacks W the greatest danger spot, namely the Steel Helmets who do not disiruise their intention to- destroy' the Republican state and build up a. new constitution on the Italian or tloe Russian model.
