BOXING AT PALMERSTON

HUIiNE BEATS OXLEY. Electric Telegraph—Press Association PALMERSTON N., December 26. Tommy Griffiths, of Dunedin, tonight beat Billy McAlister, bantam champion of Australia, in a 10-round professional feather-weight contest on points. The fight was one-sided and McAlister was not up to expectations. Griffiths forced the fight from the start and won by a big margin. G. Hume, Bst 81b bantam champion of New Zealand (Wellington) beat T. Oxley, Bst 121 b (Pahiatua) in tli e star preliminary bout. In an interesting and willing fight Hurne showed well as a boxer in the first round against the stronger boy, but Oxley forced the pace in the second. In the third round Oxley tired slightly and was in a bad way at times. Hurne went right after" his man in the last round and made the fight until the last, when he tired, and Oxley’s chances looked momentarily brighter for a knock-out had he rallied enough. Says the Manawatu Times: “A bout that was keenly anticipated was that between C. liurne (8.8), amateur bantam champion of New Zealand, and Ted Oxley (8.12), the improving Pahiatua lad. It was a good fight that promised everything from the sound of the gong. Both are quick, lithe as panthers and keep both gloves in action. Oxley was the aggressor for the most part in the first, being evidently quite unawed by the fact of his facing a champion, albeit of lighter build. Every punch in the programme was employed, Hurne trying to get home with a dangerous right uppercut. The third time was even better. They stood up and traded blows to the face and body, Oxley being rocked by a couplp that must have made his head feel like the tower of Ben Hur at midnight- Hurne gave him no quarter, but rocked them in, like the good boy h e is. Hurne made the decision bis for anything but a K.O. In the fourth, he used his hand like a piston. Oxley stood up to it, all gory, hut the end was the same.”
