The Pahiatua Herald PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING MONDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1928. CHRISTMAS.

Christmas, the season of gifts, festivity and merry-making, o£ joyous clays for many, especially the children, is again with us. But it should not be regarded as merely a time of abnormal appetites, of fearful feasting, loosening of the' purse-strings, and such like. The true spirit of Xmas has a far deeper meaning. It is the season of goodwill, of kindly deeds, of thoughts for those who arc destitute afflicted, or those who have leen placed in unfortunate circumstances. Hence, thoughts are often turned to the sick and suffering. Christmas we celebrate according to our individual tastes. Wo are given a respite from our everyday work and cares, and we are able to take stock of ourselves and our lives, and make fresh plans for the coming year. There are, of course', many people who would tell you that their lives necessarily have to .follow the same- course year alter year, and that it would be of no use for them to plan changes of any description. But a s a matter of fact, most men and

women could make their lives pleasanter and more interesting year by year if they gave some thought to it, for, after all, small things count for a good deal. It would be well for such men and, women if they were to realise that variety is the spice or life.. We need also the stimulus of seeing new scenes, and faces, and of coming in contact with new ideas from time to time, unless we are content to. let our brt.finis become mst, our personalities uninteresting, and our lives colourless. So to urge all our readers, when thinking over the past year, at Christmas, k, P la " a way of bringing some element or novelty and freshness into then-lives next year. They will quite probably find it easier to do. and more worthwhile than they had imagined. There arc- indications that to a great number the vuletide gatherings will oe very enjoyable, and we cordially wish the residents of this district “A MERRY XMAS.”
