TEACHERS' SALARIES
Important questions relating to teachers’ salaries and superannuation were discussed with the Minister of Education (the Hon. R. A. Wright) in Wellington by a deputation representing tlio executive of the New Zealand Educational Institute. Mr J. D. Hall said that a less complicated scheme of salaries was wanted under which efficiency—to he determined t»v the inspectors, with a right of .appeal—would be the most important factor. Length of service, domestic responsibility and professional responsibility should also be taken into consideration. The shifting of teachers from school to school was an obstacle in the pathway of progress. The Minister in his reply said that the present salary system was practically obsolete and if they could arrive at another scheme which was within reason so* far as finance was concerned, h© thought it should be considered very sympathetically. The Director of Education (Mr T. B. Strong) said that at present an expert accountant was investigating tlio possibility of introducing a new scheme of salaries. Mr Wright stated that he would like to> get the limit of classes down to forty, and then possibly go a step further. He said also that he thought the Government would have to strengthen the Teachers’ Superannuation Fund.
