BOXING AT BULLS

OXLEY MISSES THE DECISION

Last night the Rangitikei Amateur 1 sixing Association staged a very successful amateur boxing tournev at Bulls when some excellent bouts were witnessed. Except in the middleweight. contest between Heplmrn and Barber, the contestants were very evenly matched and provided really interesting contests. The star bout of the evening of four two-minute rounds was between E. Oxlev, Pahiatua (8.13) and E. J. Mercer, Patea. (9.1). Both opened up at a fast clip and disnlnved clever work. Oxley having the tetter of the long range work hut Mercer rex-el-hng in the close stuff. Clever work was shown by both in the second which was fast and very even. Tlie thud round saw Oxley hitting clean scoring blows, while Mercer got away with many kidney blows and “rabbit-killer” punches. Employin'the same tactics in the thrilling last round Mercer was lucky to get the decision from a better boxer, 'sacs the Manawatu ’Times.

After the tourney the visitors and competitors were very hospitably entertained at supper. Mr Oxlev on behalf of the Pahiatua Boxing Club took the opportunity of presenting the medal for the most scientific display at the recent Pahiatua tournev to J Heplmrn. and to complimem the Rangitikei Association on their good display. He also announce.! that another tournev would l>o held in Pahiaana early in September
