Makiiri 3. The game on the Recreation Cron ml between Mangatainoka and Pahiatua was a dreary, ragged, exhibition. Pahiatua wore greatly weakened with several of their regular men away and at no stage of proceedings looked possible winners. More than the usual number of player's seemed to get in the wars and Wright and McSherry both received cuts about the eye. The teams were: — Mangatainoka (black); J. Tait; Geange, Harris, Upston ; A. Tait, Hunt; Brown; May, Bryant, Moynnhan, Fades, Hunt, Taylor, Rieid and Skilton. Pahiatua (blue); E. Herbert; W Lawry, P. Herbert, Gray; J. McSherry (1), Oxley (2); Wright; Piper, Priest, Hudson, Morrison, Rtiskell, Hansen, An gel ini and Nelson. The blacks were the early attackers and the first incident of note was the cessation of hostilities while the referee re-inforced his attire with an additional pair of pants. The efforts of Mangatainoka were rewarded when a loose rush carried the ball over the goal-line and Jack Moynahan fell on it to score by the posts. Upston goaled Mangatainoka s—o Good work by Oxley put the blues within striking distance. Alec Tait 'strHl ah© “dummy” and Geange was nearly through. The “Toki " hacks opened and Harris cut infield strongly to go over under the posts for a fine try. Upston had no difficulty with the kick, Mangatainoka 10—6. On resuming after lemon time indecision on the part of the Pahiatua backs in taking a high kick from J. Tait, let the blacks onto the line where Skilton dived across at the corner. His effort at conversion failed Mangatainoka 13 —0. A useful run along the side-line hv McSherry who centred, let the bines down onto the line where a scramble ended in Priest scoring. Pat Herbert’s kick failed to rise. Mangatainoka 13—3.
Things woke up when Pahiatua made a great rally and Oxley and W. Lawry were dragged down as they dashed for the line. P. HerIvert and Nelson bustled Jock Tait and Ruskell hooted down. “Toki” came back with a passing rush in which Msv figured prominently. He lost possession under the goal-posts but Bryant was there to fall on it. Hunt raised the kick: Mangatainoka 16—3. Air E. H. Lett refereed.
