STILL UNSETTLED TAWA FLAT STRIKE. Electric Telegrapli.—Press Association WELLINGTON, Last Night. A further conference called to-day in connection with the Taw a Flat tunnelling dispute proved fruitless, neither party agreeing on the wages. The contractors stated that if the present workmen did not agree to their offer of 18s for shovellers they (the contractors) would take steps to man the tunnel on January 4. As the conference had failed they reserved the- right to engage whatever labour they liked. HAWERA DRENCHED. HAWERA, Last Night. Following a brief thunderstorm which commenced at 11.30 this morning a torrential downpour of almost tropical density, drenched the Hawera district to-day. During the space of two hours almost two inches of rain fell. It is considered the heaviest experienced for many years. Many of the principal thoroughfares of Hawera were inundated .and the flood waters reached a depth of nine inches over the middle portion of the Main street for a distance of 100 yards. SUBSIDY FOR PORK. AUCKLAND, December 23. Without Government help it is doubtful whether the park export business could carry on. according to a statement by the Premier to-day. The export season is just starting and the dairy farmers will be able to enjoy Christinas better when they know that the Government has decided tr> come to the rescue with a three-year subsidy, the amount for the first year being estimated at £30,000. FIRE AT LOWER HUTT. WELLINGTON. Last Night. About 4.15 p.m. to-day a firo occurred in one of the completed sheds of the new railway workshops at Lower Hutt, The Lower Hutt fire brigade were communicated with and found the roof'on arrival to bo blazing fiercely. About half the roof was totally destroyed only the steel girders remaining. The cause of the fire is unknown. HOUSE. DESTROYED. GREYMOUTH. Last Night. A fire early this morning destroyed, the eight-roomed residence of Mr Robert Moore, of Cobden. Nothing was saved. The insurances on the house were £4OO and on the furniture £l7O in the State Office.
