ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER

SENSATION AT ELLERSLIE

Electric ielegrapli—2*ress Association AUCKLAND, Last Night.

A sensational affair took place about mid-day to-day in a house in Great South Road, Eilerslie. Detective Nalder and Acting-Detec-tive Power had occasion to interviews’ a man named Athol George Beamish White. It is understood that when both officers went into the room where he was, YY r hite picked up a gun and shot at Power, the bullet narrowly missing him. Detective Nalder immediately seized White and took him to the City Police Station, where he was charged with attempting to murder Power. YY 7 hite, who is twentyfive years of age, appeared before Mr J. YV. Poynton, S.M., at the Police Court this afternoon. Cliief-Deteetive Cummings asked for a remand until to-morrow, which was granted. White then said: “I thought he was trying to put me back in the asylum. That’s why I tried to murder him. It’s as good as murdering me to put me back in the asylum.” The Magistrate asked accused to repeat this statement and advised the Clerk of Court and the Chief-Detec-tive to take a note of what White said. YVhite did so and all that he said was transferred to paper.
