GENERAL CABLES
MINERS RESUME. All coal-miners on the South Maitland (N.S.W.) fields have, lesumed alter on idleness of nearly a. month involving 10,000 miners. BANK OF ENGLAND. It is reported that the Rank of England has accepted the offer of M. Moreau, Governor of the Bank of Fiance, for the prompt payment of £33,000,000, being the balance of an advance of £51,000,000 and the restoration by the Bank of England of' £18.000,000 of gold deposited as security therefore. It is presumed the Bank of France is anxious to repay the debt earlier than arranged, and recover gold in order to strengthen the financial position preparatory to stabilisation in France. A search is proceeding throughout London for important, documents relating to Britain and Japan lost in a taxi-cab bv a member of the Japanese Embassy. It is understood that the four Australian tenderers for the Navy meat contract are most hopeful of success. At Wellington Bora Firth proceeded against George William Wood, a butcher, in the Supreme Court, seeking au order for £1 per week maintenance in respect of an adopted child. A decree absolute was made in September, since which both parties have re-married. Mr Justice MacGregor said that the court had given tho custody of the child to the petitioner. Ho was satisfied that respondent had a legal responsibility, although tiie other husband would be liable if the child became destitute. It. had been submitted that petitioner and her husband were in such a good financial position that no order should be made against respondent, who it was said, was not in a position to pay. Respondent was doing good business and could evidently afford to pay £1 per week. Petitioner’s husband was unable to work and the two were not in a wealthy position. Tho order asked for was made as from January 1. Some years ago a youthful pair of lowers in Dunedin, finding that the course of their love did not run true (tlic parents of the lady not approving of the match), decided tq surmount all obstacles fby running away and getting married. After a time, however, the divorce law was invoked, and the pair separated and went their respective ways. But their love for each other, dimmed for the time being, was r.ot entirely extinguished, and it flamed again so strongly that in Wellington last Thursday they made their second appearance together at the altar, and were reunited.
