INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC.
ST A TEA IENT BY AIINISTER. Electric Telegraph—Tress Association WELLINGTON, Last Night. A lengthy statement was issued to-day by Hon. J. A. Young, Health Alinister, concerning influenza. He states that the port health officers have been instructed to adopt a vigorous inspection of all ships from overseas, particularly Europe and to withhold xiratique in the case of shiiis arriving with influenza aboard or with a history of epidemic influenza at an earlier stage of the voyage.
Medical officers of health have been instructed to satisfy themselves that quarantine stations are able to be opened up at a moment’s notice and accommodate as required and also to satisfy themselves that local organisations are in readiness to cope with any outbreaks which may occur within New Zealand.
The Department and public were better organised to-day than at any time before, to deal with an epidemic.
The' official advice received of the nature and course of the epidemic in Europe, is by no means as alarming as the -gabled news m the papers. A meeting of Alayors of Wellington city and nearby boroughs, chairmen of adjoining local bodies and other institutions concerned in health matters in AVellington district, was held on Thursday at the suggestion of the Department of Health to discuss means whereby the AVellington area may be placed in a state of preparedness should the influenza epidemic reach New Zealand.
