PAHIATUA TOURNAMENT ENDS F. MACKIE SINGLES CHAMPION The Pahiatua Lawn Tennis Club’s annual tournament was terminated yesterday morning, having, on account of rain interruptions, extended into the filth day. The club was somewhat unfortunate in the weather that was experienced but happily the competitors accepted the circumstances philosophically and did their best to adapt themselves to the conditions.
The men’s championship singles was annexed by Frank Mackie, Woodville’s top man, who was much too strong for N. Groves, of Masterton, in the final. With Miss Clark, Mackie also won the combined championship doubles from J. O. Holton and Miss 11. Card, having only just scraped home ahead of R, Cowper and Miss Cowper by 14—12 in a ding-dong tussle in the semifinals. . ATa'-kie and Holton, with a handicap of 6, carried off the men’s handicap doubles from Groves and Cripps, of Masterton. Quite a splendid performance was put up by Denis Coombe, a high school pupil, who, with a handicap of IS points, won the men’s handicap singles by consistently good tennis. In the final he met H. D. AlcC.nachie, of Feilding, who was on scratch, but the local boy disputed every point and wound up with well-merited victory by a margin of 18 points. Mrs N. Groves, of Masterton, was too strong for the opposition in the lad ies’ championship singles and even Miss R. Card’s steadiness in the final encounter was no match for the other lady who won comfortably by 9 games to 2. Mrs R. Cowper and Miss O. Blakiston, the Dannevirke pair, annexed the ladies’ handicap doubles after a close contest wi th M isses R. Card and G. AVickens, of Featherston.
It is gratifying to know that the entries exceeded those of the previous year and is proof that the tournament is attaining a deserved popularity with outside clubs. The tournament was conducted perfectly under the direction of the secretary, Mr S. M. Wilson, and Air P. R. Boagey. Each day the lady members of the club provided abundant refreshments.
