THE WITCHES CAKES.

Once upon a time three brothers went out to seek their fortune, and after walking all day they saw a light in the distance. Following it, soon they < ate t<> a. little novel, where an old witch wc.s baking cakes. The boys climbed on the roof and looked down through the wide chimney. They saw the witch take up the cakes and place them on a dish whilst her cat sat beside her. The boys had a long spiked stick, and with this they managed to pick up one cake after another, for they were very hungry, as you may guess. At last the w itch noticed her cakes disappearing as fast as «lie baked them.

“You tlvef!” she cried, shaking her fist at the cat, “you steal them when my back is turned.”

One of the hoys laughed, and the old woman heard them. She looked tip the chimney and saw the brothers, and going outside begged them to come down

“It is cold up there; come to my fire,” said site, and the boys came down. When they were in tlie hovel she showed them the great broad pele, or .shovel, which she used for putting the bread into, the oven.

“Sit on it for a moment, my little gentlemen, it makes a famous horse.*i said she. coaxingly; but the boys did not trust lier. “First show us bow to do it. Grandma,” said they. "and then we can coipv vou.”

The witch sat on the pole as if it were a horse or her broomstick, ami quickly the boys called on their fairy godmother to help them. Bike a fiasii of lightning the fairy appeared, and she thrust the pele, witch and all, into the oven whilst the boys escaped from the hovel.
