N.Z. AND ABROAD. The appointment of Mr Dallard as Controller-General ol Prisons was ieceutly the subject of an appeal by an officer of the Prisons Depcrtm-e'it. It was announced to-day that the appeal had been dismissed by The Public Service Appeal Board. The appointment ot Mr Dallard, therefore, is confirmed. The Moulin Rouge, Montmartre, France, was the scene of a dancing tragedy. A merchant- from Limoges, whose young daughter had fled from home, searched Paris for several days eventually tracking the- girl to the dancing hall in the Moulin Rouge. After a scene in which the girl refused to listen, but went on dancing instead, tlie father drew out a> revolver from his pocket, and blew Ids brains out. Miss Mitchell (Britain) won easily the international typing championship, averaging ninety words per minute for twenty-five minuets, and defeating thirty-five men and women from all European countries. Madamosille Vivian won the French championship, with seventy-two words per minute. Thieves entered the house of "Mr E. G. McDermott, the- well-known trotting trainer in Tailored street-, Spreydon, Christchurch, and stole between £IBO and 200 from the pockets of clothes near the "bed. They cut off the electric lights before ent ring, and were not heard or seen. The President of the United Licensed Victuallers Association, Sydney, has issued a writ claiming £2OOO damages against Rev. R. Be Hammond, Proprietor of the Temperance newspaper “Grit” for -alleged libel contained in an article published on December 9 dealing with the question of prohibition in the Federal capital area. At a meeting of the provisional committee of the Dobson Disaster Relief Fund, it was decided to make a special Christmas grant from the fund to the widows and dependents of the victims. It was further decided that the obje< tive of tlie fund slie-uid be' to provide an adequate pension for each of the dependants, the total sum requited for this purpose- being estimated at £12,000, which would be later apportioned by the advisory committee proposed to bo set up u,t a public meeting in the New Year.
