PERSECUTION IN MEXICO
Denounced by pops
Electric Teiegrapn— Press Association ROME. December 20.
The Pope held a secret consistory and, addressing the Cardinals, strongly denounced the Mexican persecution of Catholics, which, he said, was characterised by inhuman ferocity and impiety. Recent news showed that it was even more cruel than had been supposed. Bishops had been torn from their sees and priests and •people imprisoned and slaughtered even while praying. Private schools had been persecuted. He warned French Catholics that they must not co-operate in the programme of putting politics before religion or accept the leadership of newspapermen whose writings were condemned by Catholic dogma and morality. Referring to Signor Mussolini's escape, due, be said, almost to the Visible intervention of Providence, ■he deplored that Catholic persons had been attacked and buildings and organisations had been devastated at the moment when he himself, the bishops, and the faithful were united in thanksgiving for the escape and rejoiced that the * Government had punished the perpetrators.
