The Pahiatua Herald. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1926. FARM INSTRUCTION.

It is to be sincerely hoped that a decision will be arrived ••£ by the dairy farmers of this dislr.rrt that will ensure the appointment as early as pos-

sible of a farm instructor. It is hard to conceive the real objection to sueli a proposal, unless it is a fond adherence to conservative, unscientific methods. It is obvious even to the ordinary townsman, who does not pretend to know very much about breeding and weeding of herds, or farm management, that really something must be done. One has not to travel very far to see the state of a number of the cowyards, the pig styes, dilapidated fences, overhanging hedges, inferior pastures, native grasses creeping in, little or no shelter for stock, and disrespect .for cleanliness in the milking shed. The advance made by the dairying industry is something of which the country may bo proud, but the fact remains that the average yield per cow is deplorably low. Drastic culling, careful testing and tlie elimination of the scrub bull would have the effect of increasing production immensely. Wliat some farmers have done by scientific methods others can do, ana the results would be beneficial both to the producer and to the country, (n the struggle for supremacy tho New Zealand producer by adopting tlie best methods, should l>c able to place on the market produce which, because o.f its quality, will command the highest prices.
