Smith and Miss Marjorie Smith, who leave next week on their voyage to the Old Country, were last week farewelled by a number of their friends at a dance in the Cabaret Hall. Nurse Leslie, who is at piesent private nursing in Woodville, was a visitor to Pahiatua during the week Airs MacDonald, of Sandon, has this week been visiting her sister, Mrs J. Coombe, Tararua Street. Airs Alerick is ait present the guest_ of her daughter, Mrs F. Burrell. Miss Alolly Crewe, Wakeman Street, who returned on Tuesday from a holiday in Auckland, left again on Thursday for Napier, where she is spending a few days as the guest of Mrs Dolbel. Airs F. Hedges, of AVhangarei. is re-visiting Pahiatua, being tbp guest of Airs T. Bason, Tiraumea Road. Airs G. Kilvington, Tanamia. Street, expects to leave on Afonday for a short visit to Wellington. Airs Macka.y, Kumeroa, has been the guest during this week of Airs W. H. Purdie. Airs AYilson and children of AVellington are the guests of Airs Halliaay, Pahiatua. Mrs Downard, of Kaiorg AVellington, is spending a few days with her sister, Airs C-. A. Foston, “The Parsonage.” Aliss Lassen, of Palmerston North, i,s visiting Airs P. J. Alatthews Airs J. S. Bisseit has now returned from a visit to her daughter in Hastings Nurse AVillis. of Napier, is visiting her mother, Airs J. AVillis, Cambridge Street. The latest number of that charming little Alagazine “The Junior Red Cross” publishes a very pleasant portrait of Her Excellency, Lady Alice Fergusson, and a letter, in which she accepts the position of President. “I have accepted the office of President of the New Zealand Red Cross with much pleasure. I am convinced thay the movement will play a great pare in enabling the children of New Zealand to grow up strong and healthy, men and women, and also in inspiring them with the ideals of service and citizenship. I offer them my sinccrest good wishes for its growth and success.” The magazine also mentions the good work done by Miss Fergusson in Wellinston in helping the Red Cross workers during the troublous times of the epidemic. —Free Lance. Aliss Margaret Alunro, a, daughter of Air Kenny Alunro, a former resident of Pahiatua, lias been appointed infant mistress at the Nireaha school. Airs Joseph Caselberg and Aliss Sybil Caselberg of Alasterton, are leaving AYellington next week by the Tainui for a voyage to England. Aliss Hilda Seorfield. of AAellington, lias been visiting Pahiatua this week as representative for the Young Helpers’ League in connection with Dr. Barnardo’s Homes. AYR INKLES. A good life keeps off wrinkles, but a good wrinkle sometimes keeps off a lot of trouble. To remove stains and burn marks from enamelled pans, use a little dry salt. Dip a piece of rag in tlie salt and rub tile stained part until it is clean. To clean n fishy frying pan. fill with cold water and place on the fire to boil. AVhen boiling, put a red-hot cinder in, and then wash in the usual way. Heat a lemon thoroughly before squeezing, and you will obtain double the quantity of juice that you would if it had not been heated. If lemons are kept in cold water, their freshness will remain unimpaired for several weeks. Soap mixed with whiting will stop a, gas or wafer leak in a pipe until it can he properly attended to. To keep wooden bread hoards in good condition scrub them with sand or salt instead of soap.
